Sports medicine deals with the study of exercise and performance, and the prevention and treatment of injuries in athletes. Drs. Curtin, Roser and Shea focus upon the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. Many sports injuries are treated with appropriate training regimens, which may include physical therapy. Some sport injuries do require surgery.

Injuries of the knee and ankle are very common in athletes, although any joint or muscle can be injured with athletic participation. Our group works closely with therapists and coaches to get the athletes back to their sport as soon as possible. Our facility includes investigational tools such as our full service MRI.

Pediatric and adolescent athletes are quite different from adult athletes because of growing bones and growth plates. These individuals have unique athletic injury patterns, which in many cases are very different from adults.

In addition to providing superb care for our adult athletes, our group specializes in caring for the pediatric and adolescent athlete.

Intermountain Orthopaedics has a long history of supporting sports medicine in the Treasure Valley. This includes coverage of youth sporting events, kayaking, sponsorship of the Barber to Boise YMCA run, and rock climbing. In conjunction with the Idaho Elk’s Rehabilitation Hospital, we provide sports medicine coverage to Ballet Idaho. Intermountain also provides medical services to the Colorado Rockies during their Spring Training programs and served as the course physician for several downhill events at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

In 1997, the American Red Cross and the U.S. Olympic committee developed a Sports Safety Training certificate. This program is used to train Olympic coaches, therapists, and trainers throughout the U.S. to safely care for injured athletes. Intermountain Orthopaedics, the Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Idaho Chapter of the American Red Cross have brought this program to Idaho. Starting in spring 2001, this program will provide Sports Safety Training to Idaho Youth coaches.

Our community outreach includes seminars and programs for preventing injuries in kayaking, skiing, and snowboarding, and many other outdoor and indoor sports. We have an ongoing program to provide helmets to the Bogus Basin Ski Patrol to prevent injuries to them and to encourage other skiers to use head protection.

Recent studies have indicated that ACL tears in adult female athletes occur at 2 to 5 times the rate of male athletes. Recent research in our practice confirms that female pediatric and adolescent athletes also sustain ACL injury rates much higher than male athletes.

Our doctors are actively involved in sports medicine research, and our work has been presented at national meetings and published in medical journals. Our research is done in collaboration with the University of Utah and Boise State University. Areas of active research interest in our group include:

1. Hand injuries in rock climbers
2. Knee injuries in children and adults
3. Three dimensional anatomy of the growth plates and the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
4. ACL injuries in soccer players and female athletes.
