Pronounced "ill - is - a - roff" this technique was developed by Gavrill A. Ilizarov, MD from Russia. Dr. Ilizarov is considered a genius among many for the technique he developed to lengthen and correct limb deformities. The procedure involves connecting a device to the shortened bone that is external to the body. Using thin wires and rods, the device is then capable of "growing" new bone.
The procedure is used by a limited number of doctors in the U.S.. Dr. Kevin Shea spent time in Italy learning this technique. The Ilizarov technique can be used to lengthen some bones or correct deformities from birth defects or trauma. |
